Behind the scenes of blood sugar balance

Most people manage to maintain normal blood sugar levels as they get older, even as resistance to insulin tends to increase. A new study, led by Dr. Dana Avrahami-Tzfati of the Faculty of Medicine and published in Nature Metabolism, suggests that beta cells in the pancreas are able to help the body overcome this challenge thanks to gradual epigenetic changes in regulatory regions of the genome, which support the identity and function of beta cells.
